The present invention relates to multicoatings for thermal ink jet printing, particularly multilayer coatings that provide enhanced smear resistance and optical clarity of the prints prepared from the printed inks.
Ink-jet printers are becoming increasing popular for their cost effectiveness, versatility and reliability. Thermal ink-jet printers eject droplets of ink onto a print media, such as paper, to generate an image. The printer operates by employing a print head which contains a plurality of nozzles through which ink droplets are ejected. The ink ejection is controlled by a printer controller in accordance with an input print data stream.
Inks used in thermal ink-jet printing typically comprise a colorant, such as a pigment or dye, and an ink vehicle, such as a glycol or solvent, and may also include additional components such as surfactants and biocides. In the application of ink-jet printing to the field of high quality graphic arts, such as packaging printing, there has been a requirement to provide inks that are capable of producing high resolution, high quality, full color graphics, photographic-like images, and the like on a receiver material such as plain paper, as well as on specialized media, such as photo-quality and photo-lacquer-coated paper. It is known to use pigment based inks in the printing of graphic arts, particularly packaging printing.
These inks include pigments such as zinc, titanium, iron, or lithopone dispersed in an aqueous vehicle. The dispersion may be made by a number of processes, such as the salt grinding process, milling process, polymeric microencapsulation process, copolymer encapsulation process, emulsion process, and the like. For packaging printing, there are a number of requirements for such inks, including good printability on a variety of media, excellent rub resistance and smear resistance, good lightfastness, good ozone fastness, low initial viscosity, and a stable viscosity profile.
