. . (YY, representing the year of production), Second digit is the serial number.
From August 2008 until the present, Kenwood offers serial numbers using the format XXXX-XXXX.
There are also "ASR" serial numbers for ASRs shipped before August 2008, which use the format YYYY-ASR. The Y in the format is the year and the ASR is an internal, three-digit number starting from 999.
Format-conversion
Kenwood originally shipped each car radio with a paper insert containing the correct format conversion tables. When the CD was released in 1999, they were renamed and converted to a new format. The former inserts were generally discarded.
For a long time, it was the duty of Kenwood to provide correct format conversion tables, which were sent to dealerships for free. However, Kenwood also added a feature to the CD that allowed the user to download the format conversion tables and create his own at home. The tables stored on the CD were protected by a password, which could be changed, as was necessary, to avoid piracy. Users were allowed to write or print their own format conversion tables and include them in their car. Kenwood encourages owners to do so; they provide a simple tutorial on how to perform format conversion.
The format conversion is performed in software, and involves changing the parameters from numerical to alphabetic (with some limitations). The software, once started, will memorize the various format parameters. Although the parameters themselves are not used until the user accesses the Kenwood tuning menus, there are also fewer menus in the older tuners.
Format conversion can be performed on a Mac using an application named "Kenwood Tunes".
Model and year codes
Kenwood model and year codes are assigned to car radios for a specified year, meaning that a model is built for a given year and a given year only, and may not be sold in later years. Model and year codes may be combined, as is done in the case of the "Common" (M9, M38, M66) and "Mobile" (M38, M66, M70) series. The model and year codes can be found on the front plate on the radio or the back of the radio.
The first digit of the model number is the year code. The second digit is the model number. Year codes were used for older models and could be interpreted as a model number. The last
