Release and reception
The film had an average run at the box office. The film was released on 5 December 1999. The New Straits Times wrote "Flawlessly woven in a convincing, realistic manner, Niram presents a story not many films about the Indian middle class could address. A good comedy, with good humour in the script, it is a film worth watching". Sify wrote "Niram is a film with all the ingredients that makes a love story a page-turner. It is a well-made romantic comedy with good performances by Mohanlal and Lalu Alex as the leads, with Siddique, Kalabhavan and Sreenivasan in fine support".
